What is the South River Forest?

The South River Forest (SRF) is a proposed environmental conservation area that would unite and protect a network of natural features in SE metro Atlanta – more specifically, in southeast Atlanta and southwest DeKalb County.

Ecologically rich, forested land already exists in the proposed SRF area across fragmented segments of public land and in tree canopy that shelters many established neighborhoods. Some land in the SRF study area is already in the public domain, although not necessarily protected. Take Action and learn more about threats to the SRF concept.

The “big idea” is to connect and expand these segments through intentional action – to create something bigger than the sum of its parts. By preserving the remaining forested land and greenspace in the area, the SRF conservation area could become an emerald necklace of connected public greenspaces.

What is the South River Forest Coalition?

Established in 2018 by residents of south DeKalb County, the South River Forest Coalition is a group of area residents, environmental, civic, and community organizations who support the proposed SRF conservation area. To further flesh out the concept, the SRFC worked with Perkins + Will to create an overview of the South River Forest.

The SRF would redefine what an “urban forest” can be:

• A network of civic amenities united by a forest canopy and the waters of the South River and its largest urban tributary, Intrenchment Creek.

• A remarkable setting that enriches quality-of-life and inspires well-being for all.

• An engaging riverfront park district that connects recreational activities, sustainable communities, and a diversity of natural landscapes.

• An iconic destination with a powerful sense of place.

• A celebration of the connection between health and the environment.
